A NEW LAND-USE STRATEGY FOR SCOTLAND

Posted on

A number of workshops organised by the Scottish Government have recently been held throughout the country, to assist with the development of a land-use strategy for Scotland. These workshops have offered the chance for forestry to showcase the benefits it can bring to the economy, the environment and society in general.

With the likelihood of a decreasing state-aid budget, it is important that the gains that forestry can offer are widely recognised at all levels. Through its role in carbon sequestration and the renewable nature of timber, forestry can show the way towards a low-carbon economy. It delivers public benefits at comparatively little cost to the taxpayer, in particular contributing to climate change targets. Because of these benefits, the Government is committed to expanding forest cover in Scotland from 17% to 25% by the middle of the century.

A new land-use strategy for Scotland and a presumption in favour of afforestation, would direct woodland creation to the most appropriate areas. In conjunction with increasingly sophisticated forest design, this will help to avoid conflict amongst different land uses, such as farming and sporting and enable Scotland’s rural land to be managed as productively as possible.
